ACLU Condemns Military Checks at U.S. Border

With roles as a supervising physician and an independent OB hospitalist, Shawanda Renee Obey, MD, holds nearly two decades of experience as a medical professional. Since 2017, Shawanda Renee Obey, MD, is an active member of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which seeks to defend constitutional rights for all.

The ACLU recently condemned the Trump administration’s recent move to send active-duty troops to both El Paso and San Diego, with soldiers carrying out car and document checks. In a statement, the ACLU claims the deployment makes people believe the administration sees potential immigrants as a hostile force.

In addition, it has condemned the language used in an official memo calling for lethal force when necessary, alongside detention, crowd control, and other measures. The ACLU also claims the move could violate the Posse Comitatus Act, which bans the use of military intervention to perform civilian law-related tasks unless specifically approved by Congress or the Constitution.

As such, the ACLU asks administration officials to clarify what the military is doing in these areas, as well as to make public any directives or responsibilities these troops have.
